Very cold. Busy with Governor Robinson in forenoon. Captain
John Brown, the old partisan hero of Kansas warfare, came to see me. I had a
long talk with him. He is a calm, temperate, and pious man, but when roused he
is a dreadful foe. He appears about sixty years old.
