The Democratic State Convention of Iowa . . .

. . . is to meet at Des Moines, Thursday, June 17th, to nominate candidates for Secretary of State, and other officers.  “Lafayette” Jones and Clay Dean, a worthy pair of rebels are traversing the State as emissaries of Jeff. Davis, under the cloak of organizing the Democracy to respond to this call. – Chicago Trib.

Ft. Warren Jones

Our city was honored yesterday with another visit from this man.  He is on his return home from a pilgrimage to the southern part of the State.  His object, we presume to be the re-organization of the Democratic party on the Vallandigham platform.  We believe George W. Jones to be a traitor from the crown of his head to the sole of his foot, and that if his letter to Jeff. Davis had not been intercepted, and his plans frustrated, he would be as closely identified with the South at this moment as Floyd, Wise, or Pillow.  Will not some of his friends here, who claim loyalty for this man, try and remove the stench of treason that arises from his infamous letter to Jeff. Davis, and clings to him like the poisoned shirt of Nessus? – Until that be done, let no man say there is a drop of loyal blood in the veins of George W. Jones.

The Vallandigham Democracy

The edict has gone forth; the leaders of the Vallandigham Democratic party in Iowa, have called upon the debris of the secesh element in this State, to assemble in Convention at Des Moines on the 17th of July, for the purpose of nominating candidates of their own kidney for State officers.  The Democrat, of this city says, “the call purports to be authoritative, and that being the case there is no other course for Democrats to pursue, but to commence the work of the campaign.”  Democrats will take notice and act accordingly, there is no alternative left to them.  The question arises, who are Democrats?  Our neighbor seems to be slightly exercised in mind in respect to this question, and wishes to “know at the outset whether the Democracy of the State feel inclined to work together or not.”

That the old Democratic party is dead, we have the authority of some of its leaders for asserting, and the political history of the nation for declaring.  The attempt of Vallandingham [sic] and others of that stripe to resurrect it, has virtually proven a failure.  How it will succeed in Iowa remains to be seen.  In the language of a cotemporary, it is impossible to restore the Democratic party to power upon a platform disconnected from slavery.  The party relies upon its devotion to slavery for all its success in the future, for it very well knows that success depends on its ability to rally the extremists in the south to its aid, with the help of Vallandigham, on a pro-slavery platform.  It has already been declared to them, through Vallandigham, who is an extreme pro-slavery man, that if they will join forces with the conspirators, all projects for emancipation shall be opposed, and not even the plan suggested by the President shall be entertained. – The Union men in the South who may think well of the project for the emancipation of slaves, by the States in which slavery exists, are to be put down by this Great National, Conservative, Union, Democratic party, and slavery established forever.  It is not this what the Washington conference declared through Vallandigham when it made opposition to the President’s plan a doctrine of the proposed creed?

Can this dead body live again, clothed in its old garb?  Let those who fought at Pea Ridge, at Donelson and at Pittsburg answer.  Shall we again place slavery in power?  Not until the memory of the great rebellion fades from the memories of men.

There is no misunderstanding recent movements in this State.

The attempt to resurrect the Democratic party is made by Geo. W. [J]ones, A. C. Dodge, Chas. Mason, Dennis Mahony, Barnhart Henn and others of the same class and stripe and for the benefit of the above named parties.  There is not a single live Democrat in it – not one.  There is not a single Democrat in it who has given his active support to the war for the Union.  The above parties are acting through lesser politicians just as completely played out as their principals – men who would never have voted a dollar or recruited a company for the war, but would, on the contrary, have sent a commission to Missouri to form a treaty of amity with the traitor Claib Jackson and his rebel horde and then declared for neutrality.  These parties seek power for the avowed purpose of making peace with Southern traitors and saving these same traitors from the consequences of their acts.  No such party can be organized in Iowa with the remotest chance of accomplishing anything save the lasting infamy of those engaged in it.

“Bad Off”

The “Democratic” party of Iowa is in a truly deplorable condition – no chance to steal from the Government, and whisky up two dollars a gallon! Only think of it! The whole party of the State couldn’t raise enough of the ‘Great Principle” to build a platform, at Des Moines, on the 7th of June. Verily, the glorious old party is “bad off.” And if “suthin don’t be did” soon she’ll be “wuss.” She could get along without any “stealins” if whisky was plenty and cheap, or whisky might “go as high as it had a mind to” if the party could get both arms into the public treasury – she wouldn’t keen for expenses then. But no such good fortune is hers. Heavily-taxed whisky and no stealings! Alas, Democracy!
