Menomonie, Wis., March 1, 1862

EDITOR GAZETTE. – Not being a “war correspondent” I will venture to send you only a “weather item.”  We are having splendid weather now – in fact we have had a very pleasant winter – with the exceptions of too much snow, which has been about two feet deep and once or twice it got a little too cool for out-door comfort.  The mercury went down to 40 degrees below zero – yet we have dry sunshine weather with very little wind, and altogether we have a very nice winter.

A sad accident happened on the 22d of February.  Mr. Louis C. Smith, a young man of great promise, was assisting in firing a cannon when it burst, injuring him so severely that he died, after lingering in great pain for two days.

The lumbermen of  the Chippewa and its tributaries, notwithstanding the hard times, have larger forces than usual in the Pineries this winter getting out logs – so be ready to receive large “fleets” that will be down upon you next season.

Yours truly,

CHIPPEWA.

3d.  Heavy snow storm – making three feet of snow.
