Palfrey came to me and said, “Charley Peirson has been
offered the adjutant's office for the Twentieth Regiment. If he does not accept
it, would you like it?” I was rather taken aback. I told him I would accept it
if he thought me capable of qualifying myself for it. He said he thought I was.
