Diary of Gideon Welles: Wednesday, December 20, 1865

Senator Sumner, by his impetuous violence, will contribute to put things right beyond any other man. The President's message and General Grant's letter seem to have made him demented. Some who have acted with him and been indoctrinated in his extreme views are suddenly roused to consciousness.
