Diary of Brigadier-General William F. Bartlett: July 27, 1864

. . . . . Shells this P. M. come fearfully close. Orders to be ready to move at a moment's notice. . . . . God spare me for Agnes' sake and for dear mother's sake! I fear it will break their hearts if I am killed here. That is what makes it all the harder for me, thinking of their grief.
