Independence, September 20th.
I have spoken every day since I was at Des Moines, in the
open air, to large crowds, and generally in a strong gale of wind. Still I got
along very well until yesterday, when I made pretty much of a break-down. I
caught a very bad cold, and my strength is nearly exhausted. I do not believe that
I can keep up long. I never had anything to do with a campaign that required
half the labor that this does.
