May 15, 1858.
When I last wrote to you, I was not aware fully of the true
state of the case with regard to certain arms belonging to the late Kansas
Committee. Prompt measures have been taken, and will be resolutely followed up,
to prevent any such monstrous perversion of a trust as would be the application
of means raised for the defence of Kansas to a purpose which the subscribers of
the fund would disapprove and vehemently condemn.
Faithfully yours,
S. G. Howe.
