Diary of George Templeton Strong, Sunday, November 11, 1860

Miss Puss at tea tonight; afterwards Charley, D’Oremieulx, Dr. Carroll, Jem Dwight, Hoffman, Jem Ruggles, and George Anthon. Political crisis thoroughly discussed. General disposition to concede the right of secession and to regard it with indifference and contempt. I hold secession unlawful and most calamitous, but the South is likely to do this wrong and folly and mischief if it find the North acquiescent and good-natured. I’m sorry, however, to find so many Northerners holding the Union so cheap.
