John Ochiltree was born June 5, 1844; enlisted as a private in the 16th Iowa Infantry in the Civil War; was in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, and Corinth, Miss. Soon after the battle, while still stationed at Corinth he was stricken with, so called, camp diarrhoea, died and was buried on what was called the Whitfield farm, now a National Cemetery. He died in 1862. His father went to Corinth soon after his death, and had the body exhumed, for identification, but could not bring it home for burial, on account of the extreme danger, and difficulty, of transportation.
