WASHINGTON, Feb. 4. – Hon. Andy Johnson has been formerly
appointed Military Governor of Tennessee, with all power and authority
pertaining to that office – to continue during the pleasure of the President of
until the loyal inhabitants of that State shall inaugurate a government in
accordance with the Constitution of the United States.
It was necessary to give him a military appointment in order
to give him the executive powers of the State and hence the President nominated
him, and to-day the Senate confirmed the nomination.
The present government of Tennessee being an usurpation
every proper encouragement will through the military government, be given the
loyal people to assume control.
