An intelligent New York gentleman in a social letter to us
says, “I think that McClellan will have some hot work at Yorktown. I hope that I am mistaken, but I cannot
resist the fear that McClellan is not the man for the gigantic task he has
before him. I wish that he had some of
your Western troops with him. I think
the fact is beyond dispute that the Western soldiers are the best fighters and
the Western officers the ablest in the Union.
