. . . published in the papers of the 27th or 28th ult. would lead
the reader to suppose that Capt. Davis, U. S. N., was ordered out here to relieve
Flag Officer Foote. Such is not the
case. We speak knowingly that notwithstanding
the impaired health of the Flag Officer, he has not the remotest idea of asking
for the Department to relieve him from duty on that or any other account. Captain Davis comes here in the capacity of
fleet captain, and being second in command, will merely relieve the Flag Officer
of much labor and anxiety consequent upon his position, but not relieve him of
the command of the flotilla. – Fort Pillow
Correspondence of the Cincinnati Commercial.
Com. Foote has taken a trip to Cincinnati, but, it is
presumed, will soon return to active duty.
