To Colonel J. J. Pettigrew,
Sir: You are ordered to take possession of Castle
Pinckney. You are to act with the greatest discretion and prudence, and to let
it be known that you take possession in the name of the Governor of South Carolina,
and in consequence of the extraordinary orders executed last night in relation
to Fort Moultrie, and with a view at present to prevent further destruction of
public property, and as a measure of safety also.
