Spend most of day writing, at 12. m. a salute of 200 guns
fired by order of Genl Canby in honor of the surrender of Genls Lee to Grant
& Genl Jonston to Sherman, Maury is reported in camp 40 miles from here
& Meridian is in the hands of the yankees, take a stroll this evening, find
the whole army in fine spirits & it is reported that Col Forest has
surrendered at Memphis, weather very warm.
