Captain John Brown of Osawatomie called to see me with one
of his rangers. He has been stealing negroes and running them off from
Missouri. He has a monomania on that subject, I think, and would be hanged if
he were taken in a slave State. He has allowed his beard to grow since I saw
him last, which changes his appearance entirely, as it is almost white and very
long. He and his companion both have the fever and ague, somewhat, probably a
righteous visitation for their fanaticism
