Yesterday we had a
beautiful and touching proclamation
from Lincoln, rendering General
Hunter's order freeing the slaves of North Carolina, South Carolina and
Georgia null and void. One of the most extraordinary things that has happened
for a long time was the calmness with which that order was received. We have
certainly advanced twenty years. The confidence in the President was shown by
the entire acquiescence in everything he does. We feel that he is earnest and
means to do right. A unique man. Rob's attempt to get a commission is
fruitless. Mr. Sumner told him it is impossible.
