On the 25th of the month a proclamation is due from Mr.
Lincoln and everyone looks for emancipation. If he issues such an edict of
course the pro-slavery generals must either resign or fight for freedom with a
will, because if slavery is extinct, not to be revived under any circumstances,
all their hopes of preserving it are past and they will be tired of
shilly-shally when there's no object to be gained by it. Oh, that the Lord
would only put it into Lincoln's head to do something strong and decided! We
must ride this time through.
