A beautiful morning, quite cool. Banks went to New Orleans
yesterday; his staff remains here still. A prisoner was brought in by my
pickets this morning. He just came from Port Hudson. Says they have fifty
thousand men there. They think we have about sixty thousand here. If they knew
that we only had sixteen thousand fighting men here, perhaps they would drop in
on us some morning.
