ST. LOUIS, MAY 8.
The following dispatch was sent from headquarters this
evening:
“ST. LOUIS, May 8,
1862.
“Gen. Curtis reports from Batesville that the enemy in
force, on the opposite side of the river, under Coleman, fired on our pickets,
wounding one man. The Union troops
returned fire with artillery, and drive the enemy, several of whom were carried
from the field, and captured a number of prisoners, about 100 stand of arms,
and considerable contraband property.”
About 100 prisoners of war will probably be discharged from
the McDowell College to-morrow, upon complying with the conditions in each
instance required.
