MY DEAR * * * *
I am very sorry to hear that Mr. Stanton succeeds Mr.
Cameron as Sect'y of War. I was in hopes that Mr. Holt would be appointed. Mr. Stanton
does not like me, and of course will take the first opportunity he can to
injure me. I shall take my precautions accordingly so as not to give him a
chance. * * *
