We are pleased to see that Gen. Halleck has recommended
clergymen to take the oath of allegiance, that the people may be able to
distinguish between the loyal and disloyal of that profession. There are several ministers there who sympathize
with the rebels, but who in order to retain their places, have been trying to
sail under neutral colors. It is now
time that they show their hands. A man
who sympathizes with treason is not fit to teach religion. A man that betrays his country is no better
than one who betrayed the Head of the Church.
