Yesterday there was a letter from the President to Fremont
saying that he wished him to modify his proclamation
in regard to slaves and that he expressed his desire publicly at the
request of Gen. Fremont, whom he had privately informed of it before. Today
those nasty papers say that Fremont will resign. I wish they might all be cut
off in the midst of their career and not be allowed to publish a single issue for
six months.
