“The Briars.” — We returned home, as we
are wont to call this sweet place, yesterday, and are just now taken up with
family matters of deep interest. The army in Virginia seems quiet; but our arms
had a severe reverse on Thursday. Fort Hatteras was bombarded and taken by
Federal vessels. They also secured many prisoners.
General Floyd, in
Western Virginia, had a severe skirmish with the enemy, about a week ago, and
drove them off with considerable loss. Our loss was small.
