October 19 General Grant accepted the command at once, and
has already issued his orders to Thomas. He considers it indispensable that
Rosecrans should be relieved because he would not obey orders. His health and
spirits are very good, but he is still quite lame, and moves with difficulty on
a crutch. Meigs is here.
