Looked over the report of the committee of Congress which
went to Kansas in 1856 to investigate the troubles there. I did this in order
to ascertain whether John Brown committed murder at Pottawatomie Creek in May,
1856. The affidavits show that a party which he commanded did take five men
from their houses at night on the 24th of May, 1856, and murdered them at once.
These were pro-slavery men, and they were killed when there was danger that the
Missourians would get possession of the government of Kansas.
