Diary of Margaret Junkin Preston: July 9, 1862

Yesterday we began to narrow down our use of even "Confederate coffee" (half wheat or rye) to once a day — our sugar is getting so low, and we expect to get no more till the war is over. Sugar is rarely to be bought, and when a little is to be had it is $1.00 per lb.!
