Sundry applications were made to-day to leave the country
under flag of truce, provided I would not permit the names to be published. The
reason for this request is that these persons have connections here who might
be compromised. I refused compliance. In one or two instances they
intimated that they would not have their names published for thousands of dollars.
My response to this was such as to cause them to withdraw their
applications.
