Chattanooga,
Tennessee,
December 12,
1863.
ALL is well with me. Everything looks bright and favorable
in this command. I feel under many obligations to you for the interest you have
taken in my welfare. But recollect that I have been highly honored already by
the Government, and do not ask or feel that I deserve anything more in the
shape of honors or promotions. A success over the enemy is what I crave above
everything else, and desire to hold such an influence over those under my
command as to enable me to use them to the best advantage to secure this end.
