FORTRESS MONROE, March 23, via BALTIMORE, 24. – The steamer
Chancellor Livingston arrived from Hatteras last night. Immediately after the occupation of Newberne
our expedition to Beaufort was started by General Burnside. The place was however evacuated before our
troops approached, but Macon was blown up by the rebels, and the Steamer
Nashville burned. On the day General
Burnside occupied Newberne 1,600 rebel troops were on the road between Goldsboro
and Newberne.
