CAIRO, Jan. 27. – Rumors are rife in the streets, that the
expedition which left Bird’s Point on Saturday has had a fight with Jeff.
Thompson, and that the guerilla chieftain is now a prisoner under Col. Wallace.
It is also reported that three Tennessee regiments have been
intercepted on their march to Sykeston.
A cavalry force was dispatched to Price’s Landing in quest
of the parties who fired on the steamer January, and succeeded in capturing
three who were concerned in the firing.
Various parties of notoriety are said to have been killed and captured,
but no credit is given to these reports.
