This is the anniversary of Theodore Winthrop's death, and
we've just got used to missing him. As Mother said today, “It doesn't seem a
year since he died, but it seems as if he had been dead years.” Think of his
falling with Nellie's and my photographs in his watch! I can't realize it; a
man who will be known in all history and who is now spoken of as a second Sir
Philip Sidney.
