7th October, '61.
Well, and how goes the day in your heart? Mrs. Shaw had a
few lines from Mrs. Fremont the other day. It is fine to see her faith in her
husband. Can there be any who do not wish him well and hope for his success?
I am putting down some of my thoughts about the war in a
lecture upon “National Honor.” It is really a speech upon the times. The
Fraternity wanted me to open their course upon the 15th, but I cannot be ready
before the 29th October. Then I shall come; and I shall see you, I hope, though
I do not know that I can do more than front, fire, and fall back.
