Diary of 5th Sergeant Alexander G. Downing: Friday, May 19, 1865

Started at 10 a. m. and after marching fifteen miles, went into camp within four miles of Alexandria, Virginia. Sherman's entire army arrived today and all, including the artillery, which we kept with the infantry all the way, are in camp near Alexandria.
