The enemy appeared on our right flank about 3 o'clock a. m.
evidently with the intention of cutting us off from the rest of the army, but
didn't succeed. It has been very warm all day, and by far the most difficult
marching we have had during the campaign; encamped near Bowling Green. General
Hancock is reported ten miles ahead of us; no fighting to-day.
