Let us inquire into the fact. On examination of the
passages to which you refer for proof that the patriarchs were slaveholders, we
find that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, all had many servants, but no
mention whatever is made of slaves. That you are strongly inclined to
consider the term servants with exclusive application to slaves, we
have evidence throughout your communication. But that this exclusive use is
warranted by the sacred writers, we do not allow.
