Col Whiting at
Warrenton writes that a contraband tells him he heard his Master, that Genl
Johnston is on an Island in Hines County Miss with one hundred & fifty
thousand men & is going to attack us also Warrenton Col Whiting is about to
arrange Signal to all the Gunboats to his aid if necessary I find Genl Smith
pretty well advanced he can mine the parapet of a redoubt tonight or tomorrow
Is now in the ditch Shall I tell him to mine or Shall I get Batteries well
advanced on every approach.
