North Elba, November
9.
Father, you said
that you were cheerful. I am glad of that. But why should you be otherwise? All
you were guilty of was, doing your duty to your fellow-men. Would that we were
all guilty of the same. Martha and Bell* bear their grief like heroines. . .
Give my love to Stevens and the other prisoners. Tell them I think of them
often; tell them to hope for the best; but be sure and be prepared for the
worst. . . .
Ever your affectionate daughter,
Annie Brown.
