July 4th, 1863.
"Be ready to
march at a minute's notice," is the order. At the same time we learn that
Vicksburg has surrendered; that Johnson is in a trap, and that we are to help
"bag the game." So away we go, in light marching order. We marched
eight miles and camped for the night.
