Diary of Private Lewis C. Paxson, Wednesday, March 4, 1863

The colonel invited me to play a game of cards with him. I replied: “I never play games of any kind." He sneeringly replied: "Virtuous young man you are." Lieut. Randolph asked: "Does thee think there is any harm in it?" I said: "Every man can do as they please. I would not play a game for a farm."
