HDQRS. ARMIES OF THE
UNITED STATES,
In the Field, April 9, 1865.
Maj. Gen. John Gibbon, Bvt. Maj. Gen. Charles Griffin, and
Bvt. Maj. Gen. Wesley Merritt are hereby designated to carry into effect the
stipulations this day entered into between General R. E. Lee, commanding C. S.
Armies, and Lieutenant-General Grant, commanding Armies of the United States,
in which General Lee surrenders to General Grant the Army of Northern Virginia.
Bvt. Brig. Gen. George H. Sharpe, assistant
provost-marshal-general, will receive and take charge of the rolls called for
by the above-mentioned stipulations.
