[FORT MONROE, VA., July
1, 1861.]
General McClellan's condition is very critical. He is
surrounded by overwhelming numbers. He has been fighting five days. I am
sending him re-enforcements, but they are for the most part exhausted men. I
hope for the best. I have private despatches from him. Yesterday he was attacked
at all points, but he held the enemy in check. May God be with us!
