Since the children
of Mammon have opened their batteries upon me, Downer writes me frequently, and
says the wisest things about political and personal affairs. He is so much
ahead of the age, that He seems not few will appreciate him. He seems not to
have any power to lead or create a party; but he has more wisdom than
four-fifths of those who constitute parties. He proves all the good things I
have ever thought of him.
