The kindness exhibited toward you as well as myself by our people,
in addition to exciting my gratitude, causes me to reflect how little I have
done to merit it, and humbles me in my own eyes to a painful degree. I am very
sorry the weather was so bad that I could not give the President a review. I
wanted him to see the troops, and wanted them to see him.
