You must not feel despondent about public affairs. Lincoln
is going to be reelected. Every officer ought to show double zeal, and every
citizen double interest in recruiting, if any military success is to have an
effect on the result. I think that four years under McClellan would destroy
what is left of the Republic. I am very, very sorry that his name is to be used
by men like Wood, Vallandigham, and Cox.
