Statement of Lieutenant Carnot Posey (of Company "B") of the charge of the Mississippi Riflemen on the South Eastern fort of Monterrey, September 21, 1846.

On the morning of the 21st Brig. Gen Quitman's Brigade approached the south eastern corner of the town, after two or three volleys were fired, the order was given to the Missi Riflemen to charge the fort, which was forthwith, and unhesitatingly obeyed, when I arrived within twenty or thirty paces of the fort, I observed Lieut. Col. McClung waving his sword on the top of the breast work, and calling on the men to rush on. As I reached the brink of the ditch, I turned and called on Co. "B" to rush on, calling their attention at the same time to their Lieut. Col on the top of the fort. In turning to call on our company I was particular to look round me, and did not see any men near the fort except the Missi. Riflemen, of this I am certain. I threw myself, and crossed the same, passing round the "Round fort" to the second fort, by the distillery. When I approached the second fort, I observed two officers of the Mexican army, holding up the hilts of their swords, and surrendering to our men. I immediately turned to our men calling on them not to shoot, as the fort had surrendered, and observed none except the Riflemen near me. Not entering either fort, I passed, and crossed the creek beyond the fort pursuing the flying enemy. Col Davis, and Capt. Cooper being with me, with men from each company. After crossing the creek we turned to the right, being about two hundred yards from the third fort, and approaching the same we crossed a ditch to the right, and then turned to the left up a lane or street, being continually exposed to a shower of bullets, the men returning the fire of the enemy from every hut and wall. When in the act of charging the third fort, we were called on to retire from the town which was done under a continued, and heavy fire from the enemy. After reaching the field, we were charged by the cavalry of the enemy, which were repulsed by a few volleys. Col. Davis was then joined by Maj. Bradford with the rest of the Regt. when the Regt. was ordered to the assistance of Gen. Taylor. Before reaching the town, the Regt. was ordered to return to the camp, which was done, being under the cross fire of the enemy's cannon for some time.
