ST. LOUIS, Feb. 1
Intelligence from the Southwestern part of Missouri,
indicates that several days may elapse before the occurrence of anything
important.
Commodore Foote being in want of men for the gun boat
service, Gen. Halleck has issued a general order, in which commanders serving
in the department are ordered to take immediate steps to ascertain what men in
their respective commands desire to be transferred to the gun boat service. –
Care must be taken in selecting and preference be given to men best fitted for
such service. The men selected are
ordered to report to Lieut. J. W. Brackett, U. S. A., St. Louis, by whom they
will be enrolled and shipped. A list of
men furnished from each command in writing, in each case, the company and
regiment is to be sent to headquarters, that orders directing such transfer may
be issued without delay.
