79th Illinois Infantry

Organized at Mattoon, Ill., and mustered in August 28, 1862. Ordered to Louisville, Ky. Attached to 3rd Brigade, Cruft's Division, Army of Kentucky, to September 13. 1862. 4th Brigade, 2nd Division, Army of the Ohio, to October 1, 1862. 5th Brigade, 2nd Division., 1st Corps. Army of Ohio, to November, 1862. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Right Wing 14th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to January, 1863. 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 20th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October, 1863. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 4th Army Corps, to June, 1865.

Moved to Bull's Gap March 30, thence to Nashville April 22, and duty there till June. Mustered out June 12 and discharged at Camp Butler, II1., June 23, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 4 Officers and 81 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 211 Enlisted men by disease. Total 297.
