Diary of Margaret Junkin Preston: July 1, 1862

It turns out that the cannonading heard on Thursday was the beginning of the great battle at Richmond. All around, people who have acuter ears than I have hear it with wonderful distinctness. Every day since, the sound has been audible, especially when on a hill top. Mr. F. stood this morning (I was beside him) and counted the rounds.
