Bad news this morning. General Early has had a defeat in the
Valley, near Winchester, and has fallen back to Strasburg. Our loss reported
heavy. Major-General Rodes killed, and Brigadier-General Godwin and General Fitz
Lee wounded. No other casualties heard of; and I dread to hear more.
